President Clinton's apology to Tuskegee

President Clinton was apologizing to the victims, survivors, family, friends, and the community at Tuskegee. The Tuskegee Syphilis study only had eight survivors and the one who were still alive attended and those who can’t, family members showed up to be in their place.

President Clinton gave an apology in the case of the Tuskegee community by the action of the immoral research by the researchers. He plans to make a better public health system to minority communities and hope to get them involved and trusting the public health system again.

When I read this I was amazed the president Clinton actually stood up and apologized to the public and the Tuskegee community. I wonder if the community is going to trust the public health system again because of the injustice and racist researched on the African Americans. They were offered free health care but at the end they were just test subjects to the government. Is this going to replay history again? I don’t know.

  1. Yes, history will repeat itself again. Not only in the United States, but for all countries that live in poverty. Due to their vulnerability and no access to health care, they will take any possible 'cure', even if it's just an experiment.

  2. is it a phenomenon or is it human experimentation? animals of every kind have been and will be test subjects to test the theory of the survival of the fittest. to survive the heat. to survive the cold. to survive the deadliest disease. movies such as the incredible hulk, the x-men, max payne, all have story lines of the military and the government having human test subjects to experiment such theories of creating an invincible army.

even in today's society, universities and medical professionals advertise for volunteers to participate in their research case studies. i'm sure there's no harm done but isn't this how it all starts?

  3. What was done to the Tuskegee is not only morally wrong, but clearly a sign of racial discrimination. It is against everything our country stands for and what we must stand against. The essence behind the apology itself is to restore the trust that was once seemingly bestowed upon our country.

During the Presidential Apology, President Clinton has addressed many vital points to improve the Health care systems. While history does tend to repeat, but we can always learn from experience and minimized future outbreak. Like they say, time is the best medicine and time can heal us.

  4. In this country, most of us are fortunate to have great health care by trustworthy doctors and medical professionals nation wide. In countries still developing, it is almost inevitable that this will happen again. Maybe not with American research behind it, but the vulnerability of these victims is almost a guarantee to be taken advantage of. Like was was commented earlier, history will repeat itself and I believe that to true in this case. The most important thing to do here is to learn from our mistakes and to minimize damage if to reoccur once more.

  5. I would have to say that the apology was much needed to help with African American's trusting the health care system again. While it will likely take many more years for the system to gain credibility to make up for what occurred, the election of the first African American president will help a lot to hasten trust in US health care.

Also all the regulations that went into effect after the study to keep patients from being overly abused. I believe that the situation may occur again but with the media the way it is today I do not believe that any study will ever come close to this magnitude in immorality in the US, other countries though its hard to say.

  6. It is amazing knowing he stood up and apologized to the public! Hopefully something like this won't happen again. These men had their rights violated by people they instilled their trust in. I think it will take time, but the community will eventually be able to trust the health care system again. If the survivors of the study can forgive than the public will to.

  7. I thought that it was interesting how they used such young teens to be in this video. It makes you realize that people are getting STDs and STIs at very young ages and that we need to create an awareness. I thought this video did a good job of doing that by appealing to a yougner croud.
